The Weekly Walk: To the Rescue

Sniff. Facebook posts? Sniff. Sniff. Tweets? Dogs? Is it time for the Weekly Walk?

What a good sense of smell you have. Now secure your leash, and let’s sniff out posts from our social media profiles again. We’ll even let you roll around in them.

Article of the Week: Rescue Dog Helps Rescue Infant

Since it’s National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, the Weekly Walks have been focused on reasons to adopt. Last week we wrote about the loyalty that can grow between humans and canines, and offered a story of a pet showing his loyalty. Since we already covered some of the joys dedicated owners and pets can share, today we simply want to share another delightful story involving a family pet.

Duke woke his owners, the Brousseaus, the night of October 7 by shaking uncontrollably on their bed. Normally an obedient pooch, the owners suspected something was wrong and checked on their infant girl. She had stopped breathing. They contacted 911 and the child received proper care — and Duke received many congratulatory pets. The family adopted him six years ago, and owner Jenna Brousseau says that they believe Duke was always meant to be theirs. You can watch a short news video of the story here.

Friday Fun: Pet Picker

We’ve been keeping things overly dog-centric on the blog — if that’s even possible — for National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, but we haven’t forgotten that other pets need rescuing too. If you’re looking to adopt a pet but aren’t sure of what species best fits you, Animal Planet has a quiz to help answer that question. Click here to be walked to the quiz.

So ends another Weekly Walk. But if you’re feeling energized and want to keep moving, head over to our Twitter and Facebook pages to read more of our posts. Also feel free to share any pet-related news you have in the comments below. Woof!

Rescuing Your Doggie Double

How often have you wondered if there’s a dog out there with your beautiful mug? Pedigree has been thinking of you. Hoping to help people find their doggie likeness in pooches who need homes, the company has developed human to canine pairing software, Doggelgänger. Click here to load the website.

The process is fairly straightforward. You can either take a photo with your computer and have the software scan it immediately, or you can upload a photo already on your computer. The former gave us better results. After the photo is taken and scanned properly, an automated voice tells you the photo is acceptable and an option to begin finding your match appears. Sometimes the software told us the photo was acceptable but would not give us the option to begin searching for our match, and we had to restart. This happened more often when we uploaded a photo. So there are a few hiccups in the process, but for free and well-intentioned software, this is fun.

We’d love to know your doggie likeness and what you think of Doggelgänger. Feel free to post photos and share links with us here, on Twitter, or on Facebook.
