The Weekly Walk: Woof, Obie!

The Weekly WalkArticle of the Week: Downsized Dachshund

Today we are ending the “Obie Weight-loss Update” section of the Weekly Walk. Obie and his owner Nora Vanatta have been an inspiration. Obie came to the media’s attention by weighing 77 lbs after his elderly owners had loved him with too much food. Nora took him in, and with her assistance, an exercise regime, a weight-loss plan, some surgery to rid Obie of his sagging flesh from losing so much weight, this plump dachshund went from 77 lbs last August to a slimmer 27 lbs this August. Now Obie goes on hikes and walks 5Ks, enjoying himself like a pooch should. We have loved seeing his transformation and all the people his tenacity has touched. We will continue watching Obie have fun as a fitter pup, and we will post news about him that we still find amusing or heartwarming, but since his Tuesday weigh-ins happen less frequently now, we are going to leave regular updates about him to others, rather than posting random tidbits about his week each Friday.

And with that, we want to say: Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Nora and Obie. Woof!

The Weekly WalkArticle of the Week: The New Obie Slim

Obiedog.com

We have been supporting the overweight dachshund Obie for a while by promoting his weight-loss updates. Last August, Nora Vanatta took him in when he was 77 pounds. His previous owners had been older and were overfeeding him, so Nora decided to help get Obie back into shape. And she has. Obie lost forty pounds and this week he underwent surgery to solve another problem: the removal of excess flesh that dragged on the ground. The surgery was a success and he is already on the path toward healing. Woof good cheer at him on Facebook, or click here to read an article and watch a video from ABC News about Obie’s journey to surgery.

Obie Weight-loss Update

Obie was still at 37 pounds on Tuesday, but after losing some of the extra skin, he should be a few pounds lighter. Read Nora’s Facebook post from Tuesday here.

Friday Fun: Pop Top Pups

Pop Top Pups is an online game where you guide a dog around an area to collect pop tops. The objective is to collect a specified amount in a limited time, while avoiding doggy distractions such as rabbits moving around the screen. Collect other objects to increase your speed or add time. You can also play with another player in a friendly or competitive game. Click here or the photo to play.

Article of the Week: Another Homeward Bound Fan

Click to read New York Times article.

Holly the cat made an amazing 200-mile journey home. Her family believed she was lost for good at an R.V. rally in Dayton Beach, Florida, but not so. She spent the majority of November and all of December finding her way home. The article states that even scientists are perplexed at the miraculous sense of direction some animals possess, but everyone is just glad when a lost member of their family arrives on their doorstep. Obie Weight-loss Update

Obie drops another pound. Now he’s at 49 lbs. Woof!

Friday Fun: Pooch Puzzle

Enjoy a pug puzzle from Animal Planet. This one has quite a few pieces, but it’s a great activity to keep you out of the cold for a little while longer. The rules are simple enough. Click the pieces and drag them to their appropriate positions. They will lock in place at the correct location. If you need help, you can press the shift key for a preview of the puzzle while playing.

Thank you for joining us on the Weekly Walk through our favorite Facebook and Twitter posts of the week. We had quite the cold snap in Chicago this past week to remind us it’s still winter, but temperatures should rise above freezing again soon. A regular midwest heatwave for January! Woof!
