Article of the Week

A photo article here claims that you are a dog owner if you’ve experienced the situations shown in its pictures. The article is cute and fairly accurate, and it gave us the idea to create a short list of scenarios to consider if you want to be a dog owner. The list is subjective and by no means a comprehensive guide to being a pet owner, but the five situations we mention and their appropriate responses have occurred.

1. Your dog goes to the bathroom on the floor.

a) You ignore it and hope the dog takes care of it.

b) You clean it up and help your dog learn appropriate areas to use the bathroom.

2. Your dog is afraid of thunderstorms and anxiously scratches the door.

a) You sit with your dog and pet him, or find another method to comfort him, such as using a thundershirt, during storms.

b) You declaw your dog.

3. Your dog barks and lunges at other dogs on the sidewalk.

a) You yank on the dog’s leash, jerking her along.

b) You stand aside with your dog and comfort her until the other dogs pass.

4. During a walk, your dog goes to the bathroom but you forgot a bag to pick it up.

a) You make sure no one is looking and walk away.

b) You take your dog home and come back with a bag, or you ask someone nearby for one.

5.  You are out of pet food but feel too tired from work to go to the store.

a) You feed your dog snacks.

b) You go to the store and buy pet food.
